Apfelkuchen (Apple Cake)
Not your typical apple cake.
This is another family favorite. When I was a kid I'd grip the edge of the kitchen counter, eyes peering just over the top at the mixing bowl, waiting for my mom to say "want to clean the bowl?" Yeah. With my tongue! So what if there's raw eggs in the batter. There's also butter, sugar and vanilla!


8" Apfelkuchen
Nothing fancy here. Just a simple Apple Cake, or Apfelkuchen as we call it. However, it's not like the North American version which is usually flavored with cinnamon and brown sugar. This is flavored with vanilla and lemon zest and very moist.  It's almost like a pound cake but not quite as heavy. I guess you could say it's a half pound cake? Anyway, it's studded with fresh apple slices as opposed to grated so instead of melting into the batter you actually get a good bite of apple. I know. Weird. It's veiled in a citrus glaze which adds a little sweet tang.

A nice big piece with cup of tea? Heaven.
